Dr. Smith, Jr. graduated from Texas Chiropractic College in 1975 and joined his father’s practice in July of that year. His father encouraged him to not only provide excellent care to his patients but to give back both to his community and his profession.
Dr. Smith, Jr. has been a member of the Texas Chiropractic Assn and the American Chiropractic Assn since 1975. He has held all the offices within the TCA, including serving as its President from 1984-86. Dr. Smith, Jr. was awarded both the Young Chiropractor of the Year in Texas in 1982 and the Keeler Award in 1997 by the TCA. The Keeler Award is the highest honor given to a Chiropractor in Texas.
He was appointed by then-Governor William Clements to serve on the prestigious 16-member Texas Board of Health from 1987-1993. During his tenure on the TDH, he was elected as Secretary, which is the only position elected by the members. Dr. Smith was only the second Chiropractor in Texas ever appointed to serve on this board and the third Chiropractor nationwide.
In 1995, Governor George Bush appointed him to serve as President of the Texas Board of Chiropractic Examiners and completed his term in 2001. The TBCE’s mission is to protect the health safety and welfare of the citizens of Texas who receive Chiropractic care. He represented Texas at the Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards (FCLB) meetings. The FCLB represents all the Chiropractic licensing boards worldwide. He was ultimately elected Chairman of their Board. He went on to serve as President of the FCLB from 2007-2009.
Dr. Smith Jr. concurrently served on the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners from 2005-2013. This organization is the entity that tests all Dr’s of Chiropractic, following graduation, to determine clinical proficiency.
In 2013, Dr. Smith, Jr. served one year on the Board of Trustees at Texas Chiropractic College before being asked to serve on the Board of Trustees at Parker University in Dallas. Parker University is a health science university that has 25-degree programs including a Dr of Chiropractic program. He is currently Chairman of the Board of Trustees since March of 2016.

Dr. Smith, Jr. states his greatest honor is having practiced with both his father and now his son, in treating thousands of patients.
The three generations at Smith Chiropractic have had the honor of treating families, dignitaries, Olympic, professional, University level, and high school athletes in addition to the weekend warriors. They have provided care to the UTEP athletes for over 30 years.
